Seriously. President Bush is going to use his first ever veto on a bill that more than seven of every ten Americans support. I have two comments.
First a political one. Let's say for a moment that I'm advising a politician right now who can't find even four of every ten Americans who think he's doing a good job. But he has the opportunity to sign a significant piece of legislation that more than seven of every ten Americans support, it would make me at least pause and consider advising my client to sign the bill.
Comment number two. Setting aside petty political gains that could be made with a signature, this particular piece of legislation will also open the doors to real medical breakthroughs on a host of diseases that have plagued us for much too long.
That might be another reason to sign the stem cell bill.
Here are some links on this issue, including one from my brother Scott at rhrealitycheck.org, a site he helped create.
The American Diabetes Association has an on-line petition you can sign asking the President not to veto the bill. My wife is diabetic and I just signed it. Diabetes is one of the diseases that would be an early beneficiary of stem cell research.
Stemnews.com is a great resource that easily demonstrates the important progress than can be made with stem cell research. Stemcellresearchfoundation.org is another good resource.
Mr. President, please sign this bill and be remembered as a leader who could admit a mistake, reverse course and launch an age of unprecedented medical progress.
